Housing benefit debt after death

Hi, my father passed away last month and he had some debts. He owes money to housing benefit as he never declared a private pension he had (he don’t realise he needed to). It’s quite a lot of money so just want to see where we stand. Is there we any way we could get these debts written off. My dad was disabled and had mental health issues and his death was actually due to suicide (we think in large part due to these debts). Any help would be great! Thanks

The debt would be paid out of his estate, any savings he had etc. if there is nothing of value left by your dad the council is out of luck and the debt can't be paid and is written off.
You can not be held responsible for his debts.
