I've just finished watching the true story dramatisation of the murdering Irish dentist and he was scammed big time when he greedily thought he was going to get a bunch of gold from someone somewhere in Japan. (Just been discovered, buried in WW2, he said).

No wonder he gave himself up to the cops - he couldn't afford to live after he'd given all his money to scammers who of course had disappeared with most of his money and some of his friends' cash too. Although he pretended it was because his conscience wouldn't let him rest.

This thread reminds me of that. There's no smoke without fire just as there's no gold without scammers in a country which isn't easily accessed. (I can't say 'poor country' because Japan isn't.)

I'd been wondering if I should try painting faces on pebbles and selling them for £1 each until my daughter reminded me that it wasn't environmentally friendly. I know it's been done before but someone made a fortune out of those pet rocks!

Still pondering selling bottles of fresh air . . . .  somebody will buy it.

An old colleague of mine used to go to that very same murdering dentist years ago, and unbelievably, told me that he was a "very nice man".

An illuminating story about how consciences work, isn't it.
Holding your wife under a blanket while forcing carbon monoxide fumes into her face via a hose made from your own baby's bottle = fine
Doing the same to your mistress' husband = A-OK
Sexually assaulting multiple patients = go for it bro
Living as a free man for nearly 20 years in the full knowledge of your crimes = walk in the light of Jebus
Living as a free man in the full knowledge of your crimes, and poor = oh noes I have sinned!

The Japanese gold was supposed to be buried in the Philippines, so "poor country" would have worked.
As with the Nigerian Prince scam, they both involved the idea of exploiting a poor and lawless country. (If Yamashita's gold existed, it would belong to the South Asian people it was looted from, a la Nazi war loot.)

Have you considered painting faces on the pebbles, minting NFTs of them and selling them for £100 each?
