If he wishes to close his savings account and pay the proceeds into another Barclays account in his name, then it might be worth checking if they'd accept this instruction by post.
Thanks, the problem is this doesn’t really solve his problem - he wants to move it to his Santander because it is now the only bank that has a local branch. He hasn’t paid in or done anything with his Barclays for years because of this, other than getting monthly statements with about 25pence interest lol.

It might still be worth exploring, as he might be able to have the balance sent to an external account, or a cheque posted to his registered address.

Seems a bit strange that they have ordered a paying in book when that would have required the same level of identification as would have ordering a telephone banking passcode reminder. If they don’t have his signature on file I don’t see how him having a paying in book is going to help identify him if I’m honest (I was a Barclays employee until recently).

Did you only speak to the one member of staff in branch?

Edit just seen your prev post about speaking to the branch manager.

Hmm, that’s interesting to note - thank you. I don’t really know what to do, don’t want to speak to the bank on his behalf (obviously I couldn’t anyway) so I will probably have to wait till it arrives and take him in again and see what they say

Barclays do accept other means for proof of ID. Has he kept his letter from the DWP advising him of his state pension increase?

Even though they do accept a DWP letter to open an account, Barclays do not accept this as a document to identify an existing customer.
    That sounds bizarre bureaucracy.

OP, if this is true, your dad should raise a formal complaint, and perhaps also ask his MP to assist.

...is there anything else we can do to help him?

If you don't already have it then by far the best thing you can do is get a financial Lasting Power of Attorney set up so that under instruction from your dad you can do online or app banking on his behalf so that the lack of local branches (which is only likely to get worse) isn't such a concern.

You can get or renew a British passport for free if you’re a British national and you were born on or before 2 September 1929. You can also use the Post Office Check and Send service for free and get free secure delivery.

Perhaps ordering a passport would solve the problem?

That is absolutely incredible! I did ask him if he wanted to apply for a passport but he said that he doesn’t wish to have one because he doesn’t ever wish to travel but if he can get it free this may actually change his mind, and it would give me peace of mind also!
Now to find his birth certificate…although that’s likely easy to replace if he doesn’t have it!
