Moved to new flat, best to stay with previous tenants' supplier?

Hello,
I keep reading that it is best not to switch energy suppliers at the moment because in the current price environment suppliers' SVR (price capped) is better than any tarriff you could switch to. Do I understand correctly that having moved into a new flat, the previous tennants' supplier will keep supplying the property but on their standard varibale rate? If so, how do I ensure that I benefit from this rate when signing up with the previous tennants' supplier? And would this indeed most likely be the best course of action currently?
Thanks for any help
Matt

Hello and welcome to the forum,
Yes the current supplier to the property will put you on the Standard variae tariff or deemed contract(same thing)
If you are lucky maybe it's with one of the companies listed below and you might be able to secure yourself an October price cap beating fix as well1 -
Make sure you take meter readings as soon as possible, with photos. They should match with the previous tenants closing readings when you contact the energy company.
Photos can prove the readings if closing readings have not been given or given incorrectly.
Also do the same for the water meter if you have one.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Thanks for the replies. It is British Gas. When I phone them up, will they try to put me on a tariff other than the standard variable tariff?0
