Direct debit
My mother in law has had to move in with us due to ill health, and as a result has sold her house. When we contacted Scottish Power to close her account we sent them the meter readings (day rate and economy 7). They informed us that she owed them £673 despite the fact that the house has been unoccupied since Sept/Oct 2021 AND that she's been paying them £375 a month direct debit since last August AND that they told us 2 months ago to cancel the direct debits as she was in credit with them. Despite.more than one phone calls to explain to them that she couldn't possibly owe them any money they have forced us to pay the £673 In order to close the account, the operator on the phone call was abrupt and rude with my wife who was trying to explain the situation. As I mentioned my mother in law is not in good health and this has made her feel ill, we have paid the money but want to know if there is anything we can do to try and recover the money.

Have you a recent bill from your MIL's property ? Access to the online account ?
Did you do the final meter reads or do someone do them on your behalf? What were the reads ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Did you switch off electricity and heating? The fact that the house was unoccupied does not mean no energy was used.
For example if the immersion heater was running the whole time it would explain the high bill.
Also there are the standing charges, even so they only explain a small part of the bill.0
