did you pay the deposit on the basis that it had or would passed the MOT?
if so then he needs to pay for whatever it takes it to get through the MOT and NOT pass that on to someone buying.

Hi, i would appreciate any feedback - i recently viewed a second hand car, was very happy with it and the dealer said he would get it mot'd and agreed a few things to do to it. It didn't pass the mot and it needed a few things done to it including a new brake caliper. He was keeping me updated about the progress by text of the mot retests and he said it was an issue with the brakes; when he texted that that the car was all done and ready to be picked up I then asked what the issue was with the brakes and he said the caliper, adding that it was expensive and that i would receive an invoice. This surprised me as i thought i was just buying a car with a new mot and would not be paying for any work on it to pass the mot. Where do i stand with this? I have already paid a deposit and was just looking forward to being mobile again especially with a small family.

Does the dealer just mean a copy of the invoice to demonstrate that the job was done?1

I certainly hope he means that. His exact words were 'it was the brake caliper (expensive!) you will get an invoice for the work done', which i took to mean that i will be expected to pay for it.0

Is it your car?0

if so then he needs to pay for whatever it takes it to get through the MOT and NOT pass that on to someone buying. This is probably the key point - hopefully the deposit was paid on the understanding that the car would come with a new MOT (plus whatever work you'd agreed to having been completed). That's certainly how most genuine dealers would operate.Calipers are a bit pricey, but not massively so for most ordinary cars - and certainly not if it's a garage themselves that are doing it at their own expense.Hopefully he just means, as Grumpy_chap says, they'll give you a copy for your records. But if he asks you to pay for it, I'd demand your deposit back and walk away.0 -
It sounds like he's just going to give you evidence the work was done, and not a bill to pay. If he was wanting money for it he'd have told you the exact price.
But it's worth checking when you collect it.0 -
He'd need to get the work done anyway I'd say, whoever buys it isn't going to expect to have to pay for the brake work.

Thank you all for your comments, I checked with the chap and we are not paying for it. Still, an interesting way that he put it to me about the invoice; maybe he was hoping i'd just say 'yes sure, i'll pay for it'. I really didn't want to walk away from this as it's a 2007 Honda Jazz and will be our 4th one, great condition for 91K miles and will last us years, some major work recently done including gearbox bearing which happened to a previous jazz of ours. I was even umming and aahing about the possibility of paying halves. Anyway I'll pick it up tomorrow and enjoy a nice drive home. Thank you all again.

It's common for a good owner to have kept all the invoices for all work done. I suspect this is the context in which he meant it.Craftythorny said:Thank you all for your comments, I checked with the chap and we are not paying for it. Yes that was it - when i picked the car up he gave me a little pile of invoices of work that he has had to do to the care, and he did emphasise that it cost him a lot and that 'you win some you lose some, and in this case i lost some'. I did feel sorry for him but resisted the inner temptation to offer to pay towards any of it as i was buying a car on the premise that it would come with a new mot. He also did come across to me as genuine and honest and his website has lots of good reviews, which he lived up to in my dealings with him.
Thank you all again for your comments.
