4 bed semi-detached house with 4 adults
Gas - heating + Cooker/Hob
Electric- every thing else

We got moved over to EDF when our energy company went bust .
I've been paying the bills as they come in but a £488 bill has landed today .
Looking at some of the previous bills I've only been charged for gas or electric not both so guess this is the reason for the £488 today .
Between 1st April - 15th June ( 76 days )
Gas=£206
Electric=£440

Averaging over a year
Gas £989
Electric £2113

Its this in-line what most other people are or will be paying
thanks

    Forget £'s for the moment

    Look at your bills -   are the meter readings -  are there lots of Estimated readings (E) ?

    PS You shouldn't try and pro-rata readings -  your gas in April - June should barely be on apart from hot water.; elec is lower than winter months as well
    Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    You will have been paying direct debit, not bills. EDF is only billing every 6 months.

    Did you receive a bill that ended really on the 31/03/2022 before? Did you request a bill or what happened that they would send you a bill outside of their 6 months cycle?

    If you assume that is because you have been only be billed gas or electricity before this would be also a part catch-up bill.

    If you have 4 adults do they all have laptops on, do they spend ages in the shower? There are many variables for electric and ways to cut back.

    Separate meal times will also bump up the cost if you use the oven or electric hobs after they have cooled down, The size, age and windows and doors as well as insulation make a big difference to energy use, Some 4 beds will simply use half as much to heat than others.
    Not much else we can say without the yearly kwh's and the billed kwh's

    Hi Nick,

    To try and answer your question it looks like your total for a 4 bed house with 4 adults is £3103 a year at current price cap rates?

    The notional average used by Ofgem and energy suppliers equate to £1971 a year for a 3 bedroom house with 2-3 people living there.

    Obviously your house will cost more to run and you have an extra person and so many more variables.

    It's not wildly off the chart but what sticks out is you electricity usage and that is where you can probably make some big savings.

    I read somewhere, and did a calculation that seemed to back it up, that the average price cap is based on 12000 units of gas and 2900 units of electricity.

    I am in a four bed house with four people and my usage is around 15000 of gas and 5000 of electricity. For the period you mentioned in the original post i would say that the electricity side of the bill would fall within 'normal', but the gas is high, mine is coming out at about £25-30/month through the summer.

    OP doesn't say if they have electric showers which are expensive to run.. Some use electric showers but still feel the need to heat up a full tank of water every day.
