Bird under the kitchen sink - how did it get there?

Not quite moneysaving, but I hope that someone may be able to help.

This morning we heard a strange sound in the kitchen, and worked out that it sounded like an animal under the kitchen sink, but right down near the floor. The sink is on an outside wall. Pulled away the plinth, and a bird flew out! It went to the window, and we were able to open it and let it out, but it was rather a shock!

However, we're really confused as to how it got there. We've had a look around for any obvious 'holes' etc but all looks fine. Is there anything in particular we should be looking for? Does anyone have any ideas how it may have got in (appreciate that you don't know the house, so it's a 1970s detached if that helps?)

Quite a way to start the day! I think my blood pressure has just about settled :astonished:

Are there any holes in the external wall it could have come through? The other option is it's come down the cavity and managed to find its way out through a hole in the internal skin behind your kitchen units.

We once came home to fine a bird had come down the chimney into our living room. The little sod had had a poo party all over our living room while we were out.

Thanks rob7475. No obvious holes in the external wall, which is why we're a bit confused. We also don't have a chimney.

Sorry to hear about your experience, I think ours hadn't been there long, and there wasn't any mess, but I did check carefully as that had occurred to me as a possibility!

Came in through an open window or door when you were not looking...
Cat brought it in to play with...

I found a pigeon sat in our lounge the other day. It must have come in through the back door as we've had it open in the recent warm weather. The glass often has an imprint of a bird on it so it looks like they try to come in quite frequently.

We also get imprints of birds on windows, so they do try to come in frequently for us too. If it was in a room, I'd understand it more, I just don't really understand how it ended up in the gap underneath the sink...

That'll be one of life's great questions.

It's in the realms of possibility that a human was burgling you, opened the door, spontaneously metamorphized into a bird then flew under the sink right as a breeze blew the door shut.

    It's a remote possibility, but it's possible.

Eaves and cavity, and then perhaps there is a gap either in the floor or the wall at the floor level behind the cabinet where the bird managed to crawl out of the cavity.  My friend occasionally has to rescue birds by pulling the skirting board away in one place they tend to fall down. We figured she probably doesn't have cavity insulation there since they can travel all the way down.

We get same - don't think its them trying to come in,!
They see a reflection of open space (or whatever) in the window and carry on and fly in to it
