Bathroom and non-tiled wall

I have just had my too-big bathroom radiator replaced with a much narrower towel rail and it turns out that the wall that was behind the radiator isn't tiled and seems to be bare plaster. Ideally, I'd leave this as it is until I get the whole bathroom re-done within the next couple of years, but I am worried that the steam from my very hot showers will damage the plaster. Is this likely? There is no extractor fan in the bathroom so the window is left open all the time, but it does take a while for condensation to clear.
If it will be a problem, would painting this patch with bathroom paint be helpful rather than needing to tile? I'm not worried about it looking messy, the rest of the house is an ongoing project anyway.

I'd keep an eye on it for now - I've found it is usually the high bits/corners that suffer most. In the winter, the radiator being on should keep it fairly dry on that patch anyway0
