PIP Award Review

What is the difference between PIP 'award review and a renewal when the PIP current award expires?
my PIP is not due to expire till Feb 2023 and they have this week sent me out a 'award review' on it stating if not returned by 13th July the award will end. How can this be? I though I was entitled to it till Feb next year.

The renewal invites are sent out in time for DWP to have time to process it before the current award ends. If you don't return the renewal you will be assumed to now be well and your existing award will be stopped.
If you ring them they will usually give you an extra 2 weeks on the return date.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

It doesn't say renewal it says review on the form.
    what is the difference?

          There is no difference.

Note that you will be subject to an PIP assessment, with a decision made by a DWP decision-maker based on the findings of that assessment.

Consequently, you would be well advised to treat it as a new application, and give a full explanation of why and how you need help with the relevant PIP descriptors. Enclose copies of medical evidence in support of your claim, etc.

That's the rules. If the worst happened and you were refused then your PIP award will end, despite being in place until next year. Any new decision overrules your current one.

Was the expiry date extended due to Covid?

But are they sending our review forms on the old time it would have been due?

If it was extended due to covid then you should expect your review forms at anytime.

When an award is made, the PIP Case Manager sets a review date then sets the end of the award for 12 months after this review date. Although it may look as if the DWP have undertaken a review far too early, the review process can commence at any point in that 12 month period.
If you were awarded PIP from February 2020 with an end date of February 2023 it means that your PIP award review date was set as being February 2022. If you still have your award letter it will mention on page 2 that PIP will contact you to see if your needs have changed and to look at the amount you get after a date in February 2022.
When PIP was first introduced and for a few years after, the review form was actually sent out when the actual review date was reached. Due to backlogs, the review form is now being sent out as late as 6 months before the end date.

    Seems a bit unfair.

It's always been the rules that any new decision overrules your current award.
