TAX PPI Company still acting on my behalf after my engagement with them

Last year in April I engaged a company called Brookesdale Ltd to look into my tax rebates PPI back to 2018.
I did not hear anything back from them so I assumed there was nothing outstanding.
This Year 21-22 I was due a considerable tax rebate which has been sent to Brooksdale ltd.
I have contacted HMRC which they told me it was due to me having monies owed from previous years after going through my P800 it was clear that it was not and did in fact relate to tax year 21-22. However they told me as they have a letter of engagement from Brooksdale ltd then they have sent the cheque to them. but also confirmed that it did indeed relate to 21-22 not to any previous year.
I have requested a copy of the signed letter of engagement from HMRC which they are sending.
I contacted Brooksdale to discuss the matter and was told that they had received the money from HMRC and were processing it and that it related to the Tax PPI claim.
I took them through my P800 that had been sent by the HMRC to me and to them and there was no mention of PPI and this was in fact a tax rebate due to me overpaying tax last year.
They told me that as were still had an agreement in place then this is the norm and any tax rebate would go through them and they would charge there fee.
I then discussed about wanting to revoke any future engagement with them as this is not what I engaged them to do only to look into previous Tax PPI. I was told that we could only discuss that after payment to me was made as would cause complications with me receiving my money.

My questions are
Are they entitled to my current rebate?
How do I revoke any engagement for them to act on my behalf with the HMRC?

They're not entitled to the rebate, but to the fee for dealing with it.

You can write to them to end the contract, subject to their cancellation terms.

You need to find out what the contract is that you signed.   A lot of these companies (which are not regulated) get people to sign a deed of assignment.  HMRC cannot revoke these themselves.

In future, you really need to be careful what you are signing up to and why.    Reclaiming the tax on a PPI redress payment is about 5 minutes of work for an individual.      If you used a claims company originally, they already charged on you the gross amount.   Now you are going to pay again.  Effectively paying twice fon some of the money.   And you employed an unregulated company that decided that it was in their best interests to get the money paid to them rather than to you.
