Pension on SA form

This is my first SA in a long time so just checking this is right. My employer uses Nest as their pension provider, which as I understand it is relief at source - it comes out of my salary after tax and the nest website shows the 20% relief added in.

Am I right in adding this into the self assessment form at "Payments to registered pension schemes where basic rate tax relief will be claimed by your pension provider (called ‘relief at source’). Enter the payments and basic rate tax".

This has the result of raising my basic rate limit by £1,970 (which is the amount I contributed plus the 20% relief).

Bonus question: I had an English Heritage membership last year which I ticked gift aid on, I have added this amount into the charitable giving section, which raised the basic rate by another £112. Does this sound right? I must say I often tick gift aid on things but never keep the details, maybe I need to going forward.

  • Yes and yes.

The gross amount of both relief at source pension contributions and Gift Aid increase your basic rate band, meaning more income can be taxed at basic rate and less at 40%.

They don't reduce your taxable income.
