Tree preservation orders

One of the blissful things in hot weather are the 2 huge trees that shade our house.  Neither are on our property but I wonder if there's something that one might want to do to ensure they have a TPO.  Well one in fact already does so is not an issue (except for the people who live directly underneath it and hate it)

So the one that doesn't have a TPO - does it need to have one if it's not on an individual's property?  I think it might not be as it is in the portion in front of the neighbour's house that is between the pavement and the road.  The council trims the hedge that also runs along this strip of land so I assume it's their property rather than the neighbour's.

If anyone - including the council - decided to cut these down would we be notified?  Not only would this be a major tree surgery exercise the access to the one and possibility of damage to our property from either could possibly be significant.  And the noise would be disruptive and would likely continue for perhaps up to a week - along with likely shutting down the road and stopping us accessing our property.

I'm probably worrying over nothing.

Tree surgeons took down three very big trees at the bottom of the road which needed the security fence removing first. One day including grinding for two trees, and a few hours for the other.

One way to find out: apply for permission to chop down the tree that is not already covered by a TPO! This is free, and the tree does not have to be on your land. Often the council respond by issuing a TPO.
