Energy Bills

I have just had a bill from Octopus energy, to my horror I now owe £1500 pounds where as last month I was in £349 in credit. I asked Octopus about this and they have admitted that this was there fault and have not charged me any gas since Oct last year. Does anyone know what would be reasonable for compensation. I am now left with hefty payments to make back to get on an even keel.

not sure if you will get compensation - best you will probably get is extended time to pay.

Did you not notice that you were not paying for any gas you were using?

    Firstly welcome to the forum.

Have you checked they are correct by knowing the actual meter reading in October last year and today or at least sometime before October so you know it's correct?

You may be able to discuss paying this back over the next year if it's all correct. Contact Octopus as people with them here wax lyrical how good their customer service and billing is. If they have already admitted fault I am sure there will be a gesture of goodwill and they will help you out where they can👍

  • BackBilling doesn’t apply. As an Octopus customer for over 4 years I can say that the quality of their billing is excellent. I struggle to understand how anybody could fail to notice that gas charges hadn’t been raised. Statements show charges deducted as does Octopus’ excellent App. I am sure that Octopus will make a modest offer of compensation for its mistake.

Have you been submitting regular meter readings? Did you give a reading at the end of March, along with everyone else?

You might get a £20 goodwill payment.

As others have said, Octopus should be spreading this debt out over the next 6-9 months.
As an aside, £1500 in gas for 10 months is rather more than is typical. Do you have a particularly large / draughty / poorly-insulated house?
