If the water softener connects using washing machine-style hoses then strictly speaking you should probably use these valves rather than the lever ball valve as they are 'designed' to provide a better connection to the washing machine hose, but in practice I've never had a problem connecting a washing machine-style hose to any fitting which has a 3/4 BSP thread.

At that price I wouldn't have as much faith in the washing machine tap fully stopping the flow in an emergency when required, so may use both if the better connection is preferred.
