as the topic says the cockstop has a very small damp patch and needs changing must be over 40years old
now who is in charge turning the water off outside the house, there is a meter in the ground which i`m sure last time i looked had big square socket to turn to turn off
i am with northumbrian water, will they have to come out 1 of there contractors or can i get a plumber to do it

If you're getting a plumber in to change the stop then they can turn it off when they do the work.0

Sometimes the stopcock leak can be easily fixed by just nipping the nuts a bit tighter.

When you get it changed, think about whether you want a SureStop stopcock fitting. SureStops make it very easy to turn the water off in an emergency. They have a switch on them, and the switch can be mounted remotely from the stopcock if this makes it easier to get to.The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

Any plumber or decent handyman can do that. You basically go round to tell the neighbours you need to isolate the water and theirs may go off - is it ok (as the street stopcock can go to multiple houses)
Then once off you can safely change the stopcock, a good tip is taps on to relieve as much out of the pipes as possible and have a scrunched rubble sack under it to catch the water that'll come out.
Take half hour tops. Even if the olives are stuck fast1 -
If this is the problem then no need to turn off the water.

I hope they told you that it's called stopcock. I think a cockstop is something entirely different 🤣6
