50 percent car tax help

So my husband and I have bought a used car from a dealership yesterday. We went through paperwork yesterday and we are going to finish off the paper work today taking our current car log book and that.

I just remembered about half price car tax for people who claim pip standard mobility which I do. My husband will be the driver so would be classed as the nominated driver.

Also the guy at the dealership took card details for it to be taxed and it has been charged but tax hasn't updated when you search for it..

Are we able to claim any money back from car tax people and how do we go about doing this.

Thank you
Mortgage free wannabe

Actual mortgage stating amount £75,150

Overpayment start date 1/3/23.

Starting balance £66,565.45

Current balance £63,787.16

You need to send all the paper work to DVLA but the car can only be used for the purpose of the disabled person. You will need to do this each time you tax the vehicle. (whether they have the means to check this is a different matter). See link. https://www.disabledmotoring.org/motoring/road-tax-50-reduction

I think what you do is jump through the hoops and then tax it again at half price, the taxation class changes somehow and you get a new V5 logbook cancelling the old tax and refunding any full months remaining.

The alternative would be to declare it SORN first, refunding the tax, but then you wouldn't be able to have it on the road whilst the hoop jumping was being assessed which might take weeks. (Or you could just wait until 5 weeks before the tax expires and make the application then, paying half price, but you will lose out on 5 months of half the tax money)

If you have nothing to do for a few hours, and you don't pay for telephone calls, you could ring the DVLA, or even use their webchat (I believe it is automated so probably won't help)

It says you have to do it at the post office.

No it doesn't for the 50% reduction. Taxation class stays the same. It only changes for those that receive Enhanced Mobility PIP/High rate mobility DLA.

Not for 50% reduction you don't. This only applies to those claiming free toad tax. Please read both the above links, it clearly says you can only claim this discount by sending all documents to DVLA. I used to claim this myself and the way you claim it hasn't changed since PIP was introduced in April 2013.

If you are entitled to the 50% discount, then you can ONLY obtain this by sending the appropriate paperwork to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BF

You must include the following with your application:

    • An official letter or statement from the DWP confirming that you are in receipt of an award, the dates of the award, name and address
    • an ADP decision letter from Social Security Scotland that shows your mobility component rate and the dates you’re getting it
    • the vehicle registration certificate (V5C)
    • a V10 form
    • an original MOT or GVT certificate (if your vehicle needs one)
    • a cheque or payable order (made out to ‘DVLA, Swansea’) for 50% of the full rate of car tax for the vehicle

I believe you, but why do they want the V5, or force you to apply for a new one if they aren't changing anything?
Or is it because the clerk sat at their leather covered desk writing everything in a ledger doesn't have a computer, hence you have to send the MOT as well- but the tax status is on a computer, they don't write out a tax disc by hand any more....

Back to the OP's question, if nothing is changing taxation wise, it might be best to wait until the tax is up for renewal or it could end up double taxed and no refund.  Try contacting DVLA, whatever happens, you aren't getting a refund for June, so you have a few days to sit on the 'phone.

I get disabled tax, but full amount and log book says disabled.

I think you need a bit of paper that came with the pip letter. Certificate of entertainment to personal independence payment serial number xxxxx.
Take it and the log book, insurance and mot to the post office.
After the first time you should be able to do it online.

That's not correct. When claiming standard mobility PIP there is no certificate of entitlement. As stated in the links provided you need your PIP award letter with amounts and dates of award on it.
You can't tax it at any post office, the only way to claim 50% reduction is by sending all documents to DVLA.

Yes, that's because your car tax is free. V5 doesn't change to disabled when claiming 50% reduction.

Nope, that's not the reason. Again as stated in the links i provided. It's because the vehicle must be registered in the disabled persons name or the nominated drivers name. You're not applying for a new V5, they just send the one you posted back to you.
