Thank you for your help. In case anyone visits here in the future, here are my findings. The gap insured can be the registered keeper, the policyholder or the named driver on the Motor Insurance Policy.

The rest was a bit unexpected. I keep on the car on hire purchase generally for two years so gap insurance for the same period is appropriate. I far preferred the Ford dealer package to the alternatives that I examined. At £204, it was a little more expensive than some others but the underwriting by UK AmTrust Europe Limited gave me more comfort than the Guernsey-based alternatives.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".
