Boilers - Cheap or Expensive?

Hi Guys,

I need a new boiler.

I've seen some quotes coming back at £1700 fully fitted for a E tec boiler and 10 year warrenty. Then I see some boilers at £2800 like Viessmann with 10 year warranty. So my question is, as they both have a 10 year warranty and boilers are supposed to last 10-15years, Am I safe in just going with the cheaper ? both have 10 year warrenties

They have a 10 year warranty, and the manufacturer is prepared to guarantee that. Realistically they'll last longer with a bit of TLC. I think any boiler not going 15 years is pretty poor, and 20+ before repairs become uneconomical pretty great.

Like most things in life: buy cheap, buy twice. But top of the line is usually into diminishing returns, so middle of the road.

Find a fitter you trust and go with their recommendation.

Assuming that both have outputs/flow rates that suit then check exactly what is covered & what is required for that 10 year warranty to remain in force (many will require fitting by an approved installer, a magnetic filter* & an annual service). Also any difference in efficiency - even 5% difference on an average 12000kWh pa gas usage would add up over the boiler's life especially at forecast rates come October.

ps don't scrimp on controls - better controls will pay for themselves in savings over the life of the boiler.

*curiosity got to me & I checked - the Alpha if fitted with their filter would be eligible for a 13 year warranty.
