Energy monthly price up from £71 to £132 pm

Hi, I'm hoping for some advice. My current tariff with Shell Energy is £71 pm and finishes at the end of July. They've told me my new tariff is £132 pm until October. That's an increase of over 85%. Is it worth calling them to try to reduce it or should I look to switch, if that's even available?
Many thanks

Sounds quite normal based on the price rises. Have you worked out how much you think it should be?
Please change your title as over £1k a month isn't what your post says ☺️0 -
Thanks, I thought it should only have increased by 54% which would make it
£109.00 pm0 -
You're probably on a fixed before everything went south, the 54% was based on the old SVR which you weren't on, hence the larger increase.
What was your old unit rate?4.29kWp Solar system, 45/55 South/West split in cloudy rainy Cumbria.0 -
@62Sunshine if you are coming off a fix that is one or two years old and onto the Standard Variable rate, which the part "until October" would suggest, then that is quite normal.
When my fix with EDF ends in 14 days, my payments will go up by 124% based on actual usage, so your 85% does not look too horrendous.
Current predictions for the next rise in October is for a further 40% increase for the average customer, so more grief ahead.
You need to do your sums using actual usage figures and whether your DD is reasonable.0 -
My fix was £82, current cap rate £210, and probably heading closer to £300 come October, so your figures don't seem at all unreasonable.

Welcome to the forum btw, sad that it's under these circumstances as we get a lot of first time posters posting similar to you.
A lot of people are finding they come off a fixed rate and suddenly it's double or triple the price because the 54% rise mentioned in the press was only from the previous October 2021 price cap raise and if people have been on a fix for a couple of years...well you can imagine how prices have changed!!!
Sadly Shell energy are not renowned for their good fix rates at the moment so you could look at the following guide.

It looks about right.
I'm with Shell and coming of a good fix end of July of £41 they're offering £65 on the variable or £89 on a 2 year fix.
I've gone through the figures and will probably stay on variable0 -
Shell have just pulled the 25 month fixed0

This sounds pretty good. My bill has gone up £173 pm and this is with reducing my gas usage.
I'm planning on shutting off the heating come October as another rose will be unaffordable.0
