I have just recieved what I thought was a prank call from British Gas offering to sign me up to a fixed deal for both fuels which is exclusive to existing BG customers.
I was a Together Energy customer moved to Briish Gas price capped deal when Together Energy ceased trading. I went on to my account to check validity of offer and having used their online chat had it confirmed to me that it was available

I am still working it out but It is supposed to be 35% plus on existing price cap but has 100.00 per fuel exit fees  Just wondered if there is any thoughts or advice out there. Thank you

  • I was moved to BG when Bristol Energy collapsed and got this same offer as above via email today. I think I will wait and see rather than commit myself as I think the government will need to step in before the autumn raise  otherwise with all the other rises in the cost of living etc I see a huge humanitarian crisis this winter.

I think they've already stepped in, we're all getting £400 credited to our electricity energy accounts from Oct.

Makes you wonder how many don't know about the £400 and their energy usage.......
  • I am aware of the governments present help offers but as bills are due to go up by a further £800 or so in October and food prices are going up by 15% according to todays papers while inflation is rising correspondingly I don't think it is enough. Funny how when it is the people they are supposed to represent in need there is no money but if it is the banks, weapons or multi billion contracts to buy useless PPI there is loads of money. I think we are very close to a tipping point of sorts in this country.

What a lot of people really need is help and advice on how to reduce their energy consumption, especially the older generation.

There are still millions of households out there who've never switched suppliers, don't use the internet and carry on exactly as they did in the 70s and 80s when energy was cheap.

I've recently had a tough job of getting it through to my 86 year old dad that he doesn't need to heat the tank for 2 hours in the morning and same again in the evening. He has an electric shower and a dishwasher and the only thing he could think of that he uses hot water for is a daily shave. He's now turned off the water heating and will boil the kettle for his shave. I've reduced the temperatures on his boiler which were up at full. He's also agreed he'll put a blanket over his legs in winter if he's chilly rather than putting on the fan heater as the first option.

  • @bluesjunior, where do you think the government get their money ?

They borrow it just like anyone else.

People need to make more of an effort to save energy, cook real food rather than relying on expensive ready meals.

Energy bills will depending on usage, minimise usage, minimise the rise, MSE after all. Inflation is likely to be around 11%, food inflation is included in that headline figure so if food inflation is 15% other inflation will be correspondingly less. The 15% figure is possible, current predictions place food price inflation in an 8-15% window, however 15% is the top of that prediction and it does very wildly depending on your chosen food consumption, with higher food inflation for those who eat processed food and ready meals and lower for those who cook from ingredients.
I don't think it is enough.
Handouts have to be paid for, they also add to inflationary pressures. We already have a huge national debt with huge debt interest and repayments, borrowing more would make that even worse, in reality we have already screwed our children and grandchildren with debt, more borrowing will make that generational damage even worse. The other alternative is increased taxes, but in the UK people seem to hate the idea of paying their way in society.
Funny how when it is the people they are supposed to represent in need there is no money
Well other than the hundreds of billions during the lockdowns, or the tens of billions this year for energy bills...
but if it is the banks
The banks were not given money, almost all of is was loan guarantees which did not cost the government anything. The main cost was the Lloyds acquisition and Brown screwed up with that one, but the cost, whilst billions is a fraction of the handouts of the last few years and in the end less than 10% of this year's energy handouts.
    weapons
The invasion of Ukraine has show exactly why we need to be able to defend ourselves. Also for many weapons procurement programs they are bought from UK businesses, employing UK people, with long term maintenance contracts given to UK businesses employing UK people. In most cases defence spending is one way or another the state providing jobs.
or multi billion contracts to buy useless PPI there is loads of money.
The PPI was a huge waste, the government is currently incinerating all the substandard/not fit for purpose at the rate of 15 shipping containers a day and it is expected to take 6 months or more to burn it all. It was a huge waste, but again, total cost is still less than this years handouts for energy bills. So whilst I wish the government had not wasted money on it, it is far from the source of our nation's financial ills.
I think we are very close to a tipping point of sorts in this country.
We really are not, some people are struggling, but the majority are having to just make some relatively small cutbacks and whilst they do not like them they are certainly not going to start or join a revolution as for most life is still reasonably good. The papers like to hype things up to get their readers frothing at the mouth. You only have to look at the polling which shows that whilst people do not like rising costs and whilst they like it when the government gives them "free money" there is no appetite amongst the electorate for wholesale change.

This so called crisis is the kick up the backside many need to cut their excessive consumption.
