When I returned from holiday recently my new passport wouldn't work in the readers at Stansted so I had to join a queue for manual checking.  I asked the agent if it was the reader, my passport or me that was at fault, he said it was my fault; I was too tanned from my holiday!  Fortunately he didn't make me stay there until it faded!

It took me several attempts of unedited pics to get approved to forward and then they were rejected but third-time lucky. I stood with my back to a white wall. They were quick on rejecting the pics but that was about a year ago.
As above, white door good idea - take off glasses

The process of attaching your photo to the (on-line) application for a new passport includes a part where the system looks at your photo and gives a view on whether it will be good enough. It also says how you need to improve it.

In my case, I took a photo against a pale painted wall but the system initially said it was unlikely to be good enough because the background was too dark.

So I modified the overall brightness in Photoshop and resubmitted it and it was accepted.

I edited a nice photo of me to remove the background (it was taken on a beach) and replace it with a plain one. It went through no problem.

I did mine with a selfie against a magnolia wall. The automated checking complained about something about the photo, can't remember exactly what but it wasn't correct, there was a box for comments so I just entered 'there are no axes sticking out of my head' or whatever it was, and the submitted application went through with no bother.

Same here. Repeated warnings about something that wasn’t the case, but no issues after I filled in a comment and tried anyway.

As a selfie is a reverse image you might find using eGates a problem as no face is completely symmetrical
