I apologise for my ignorance, but I would like to add/listen to music on my samsung smart phone.
Could I do it through the amazon music app which I use for my echo dot? use spotify? or is there another way?

If you've got Amazon music set up on your computer etc., already you should just need to install the app and sign in, and you should be able to access the music, playlists etc., there. Same approach also works with spotify.

You can also add music you already have, usually as MP3 by using a  cable from your PC or via bluetooth. This music will be available to play even if there's no internet connection
  • Slightly different from @flashg67 suggestion

if you are a premium spotify user you can synch your own mp3s on a mobile device. this will let you listen to the mp3s without an internet connection and also to make playlists with other songs also on spotify

Yup, Amazon Music can be used on all your devices.  Just install the app and sign-in.

For Spotify, as well as adding local files as mentioned above, if you are a subscriber, you can also download favourite music/playlists/podcasts etc fo listening to on or offline, which reduces the data demand, or helps in areas of poor reception.  IIRC, if you do download a lot, it helps to have a memory card in your phone and you can set/move your library to it in settings. IIRC all they ask is you sign-in every 30 days to keep the downloads live.  They auto-delete after a certain time if you don't and when your sub ends.

Personally, I find Spotify has the better caching, which helps deal with reception holes and anecdotally, I'd say it is slightly more data-efficient compared to the Amazon app but not by a lot.  I'd also say that Spotify's algorithm is better at throwing-up music I like compared to Amazon, which always seems to degenerate to something very middle of the road, no matter what I've been listening to originally!
