Day trip insurance in UK

Hi. Does anyone know of an insurer who will cover a day trip on the New Statesman train? We want to get the trip for my parents’ birthdays but one of them has just been diagnosed with cancer and we don’t know what the next steps are yet with regards to treatment and timelines. They have insurance through their bank but that’s only for 2 night trips. The train company themselves will only do a 75% refund if it’s 40 days in advance. Thanks!

Do the train company themselves sell insurance?

Standalone insurance tends not to cover day trips in the UK but some providers of "events" sell insurance tied to the tickets that does.

Unfortunately they don’t! They recommended the Post Office but they don’t do it. Thank you though.

Even if you can find someone who does day trip insurance, I suspect they would exclude cancellation that is in anyway related with your parents cancer.  Insurers usually exclude any pre existing conditions.
  • They won't necessarily preclude existing medical conditions if they are declared at the time of taking out the policy, but they wont  provide any cover while there are questions over the cancer treatment and the timelines. You won't have the same range of policies to chose from either. Maybe a specialist insurance broker could help you?

There's a good chance that the cost of the insurance would be more than the cost of the trip, though.

When my husband was diagnosed with Cancer (2008) the only way we could afford holiday insurance was to preclude his illness. He had been fortunate enough to be diagnosed in an early stage and intiial treatment was considered that it had been successful. We used to go away inbetween check ups, which limited how far we went and when . I'd suggest holding off booking anything until your parent knows more about their illness and a timeframe for whatever treatment they may need.
