Can you recommend paint for repairing exterior steps.

I've just had two estimates of between £5k and £6k to repair and renew my outside steps (12 steps with platform in between with handrails). They are in a bad state but was hoping they could all be repaired and not renewed. The quotes advise at least 6 need renewed and labour alone is £3000+.
Some of the concrete is crumbling at the edge of the steps and pitted and previous paint flaking off badly. There are also a few cracks from bottom of handrails across the steps. In previous years I've painted with Diamond hard red doorstep paint with good results, but now they look in an awful state, probably after some really bad winters.
As I can do simple DIY can anyone suggest a paint or other materials I can use to make them look cosmetically acceptable for the time being.

Crumbling and cracked sounds like anything you do will be temporary only, but maybe worth trying some premixed mortar to repair the cracked/crumbling parts after removing any loose bits.1

Do you have any pictures?0

Pictures please?
Also see this link below and note the screws, the damp sponge, some form of pva type glue
to get a better grip on the edges.
Then used snader to sand old paint and look up good quality non slip, slip resistant outside step paint
and coat it when dry.
IMO you will save 95% of the cost.
Do it in stages do it well, do it slow for a great result and step by step,, lol
Good luck
NB: Excellent adhesion of new concrete is required especially at edges where people step on/off to ensure safety ie you don't want your handy work to crumble as someone steps on and off. Be aware of your limits and the fact others will be using those steps in the dark/damp/icy conditions

Thank you so much for including the repair video. Though I'm not
sure my skills would have such a perfect result, it looked fantastic. It sure has given me a realisation of what is possible.
I will try and post pictures tomorrow.1 -
Yes I definitely need to do something as an expensive professional job at £6k is too expensive.flashg67 said:Crumbling and cracked sounds like anything you do will be temporary only, but maybe worth trying some premixed mortar to repair the cracked/crumbling parts after removing any loose bits.0 -
good luck, post the before and after pics if you can, otherwise, all the best.0
