I hadn't thought about it from that point of view Dave. Having thought about it I would like somewhere the cost of living is cheap once there as I don't want to have to budget/penny pinch or stress about money once there. Although I am happy to pay for long haul for the right place and will have a decent budget.

The Italy idea for example sounded lovely but I think my daughter would bankrupt us in Milan!

I think Poland. Costs once there are reasonably low, while shops and so forth are modern. And of course the flights do not take too long, nor cost very much: every pound saved on the air tickets is another pound your daughter can spend shopping.

(Similar remarks apply to Bulgaria and Romania, but I have never visited them.)

And how about Turkey? Shopping is exotic and exciting; landscapes and cities are fantastically interesting; and costs this year are remarkably low.

Not quite as far, but would Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan appeal? Both are quite mountainous so not too hot.

Again, very historic, Joanna Lumley did a silk road tour a few years ago, which may be available on Youtube somewhere.

I'll need to check Covid documentation for entry, but I believe both are ok for this now. Both are mountainous.
Just to add to this (knowing it's bad etiquette to quote oneself, however I've only just thought about it), it's probably also worth checking out the Spaghetti Road channel on Youtube. His videos may suit a specific taste and not others, but it's a generally good overview of the region. Itchy Boots (a motorcycle Youtuber currently in South America) has also toured the region in Season 1 of her channel. Both may be useful for general interest and planning, even if they're not going to give you 100% of the information you may need.

Such vlogs are also likely to give your children a general overview of the countries in a format that's likely much better for them than Joanna Lumley (who for the record is brilliant, just her audience is typically not teenagers).

That's wonderful CK! Thanks for this extra information.

It would indeed be a good idea to look at those vlogs. As lovely as Joanna Lumley is I can just imagine my teenagers eyes glazing over!  Approaching the idea from the right angle for them will be important in selling any destination to them.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Also do not under any circumstances be tempted to buy fake designer goods in Italy, the fines are MASSIVE, IIRC a Danish woman was fined EUR 10,000. You're supposed to know what a fake is, or if it's obviously a fake from the price.
OTOH in Turkey fake designer brands are everywhere, although not sure if they've cracked down on them since wanting to join the EU.
