Changing Basis For Car Expenses

For convenience I have always used the 45p/ mile method for business mileage for a car used for both business and private use.
I am sure that I would be much better off working out the actual car expenses and apportioning it to get a figure for business use. Can I just decide from a certain date to change or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks Jeremy. I suspected as much. A bit of a shame with petrol getting more expensive and a car that seems to be needing more repairs, changing would have been benficial.
