Suppliers are LOOSING money on everyone they take on with a variable rate tariff
This is due to the price cap.
If they take you on as a customer they have to buy more energy on the open market to supply you now and in the future.
As the price cap is less than it would cost them to get that extra energy every extra customer they take on looses them money.
So the only way any energy company will accept you as a new customer switching to them is if they put you on a higher rate fixed tariff - which are not covered by the price caps.

I realise that - wasn't asking to be switched on to the variable - just wanted a quote of some sort for the gas as I have fixed for 1 year now with BG for leccy.. EDF will only offer the 2 year fix which will mean ~ 46% more than current cap.Uxb1 said:

Have tried too more than once and the promised call within 5 days never happens.0

The current "Exclusive" BG gas tariff is around 50% more on kWh rates than the SVT rates. I'm in the same boat and I think it's a poor deal.
It's a shame EDF are only offering 2 year fixes.0 -
I was an ex Neon Reef and Zog customer who got shunted to BG for electricity and EDF for gas. BG fitted me a smart meter but EDF failed to fit a gas smart meter. The engineer claimed he couldn't get the gas meter to communicate with the existing BG smart (SMETS2) electricity meter. He said it would be easy if I had both utilities with the same supplier. British Gas wouldn't let me bring my gas onboard and promises of a callback just didn't happen.
I decided to move both electricity and gas to a supplier which would accept a switch to its VR tariff. I chose Utility Warehouse. The switch was seamless and my electric smart meter didn't miss a beat. Even my BG home display transitioned over. Now I have both utilities with the same supplier I have booked a gas smart meter installation for August. Once this has been fitted I can look around to see what's available.
My advice would be to get both utilities with the same supplier in the first instance. I understand Octopus will accept new customers if you call them rather than trying to do it online. Utility Warehouse too. There is no termination penalty when you switch a VR tariff so it would be easy to move when you're ready.

I have switched from BG (ex Together Energy) to Octopus' SVT. I had to phone them as it's not available online.
