Ovo did the same to me but rather more quickly. I'd given them my new address for the final bill. When I got a bill for the old address I called Ovo and they sorted it quickly. They said the new occupier hadn't contacted them to open an account. I wouldn't go in with a prove it letter just yet. They were quite understanding over the phone.

A 6/7 year gap in billing and payments seems very, very odd, but even if the occupier/s? just bounced the system by not registering
with Ovo, they would not have been able to do that with the Council Tax and those records still exist

Its likely I asked for paper bills and the bills have just been going to the old address

The emailed statement from them was in my spam folder, they may have sent other emails, which went unnoticed, or theyve just changed their process.
The oddest thing for me is they've carried on supplying electricity for seven years with no contact or payment from me.

Did you contact them when you moved and supply a final read and request a final bill? if you took no final read then it's going to be very tricky to agree what you owe, even once you have proved your departure date.

Of course, as it is over 6 years since you last had contact with OVO, it won't matter about the final read as it will be covered by the statute of limitations.  It will be more of an issue for the current occupiers who could be in for a rather large bill.  If they have not made any effort to contact OVO, they are probably not covered by the back billing rules so will be liable for the entire period.

You could try putting the previous property's details into the above. It may give you details of if OVO are still the supplier and estimates of annual use.
