We have to spend our pension money on something.   :D
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

About 7 miles from Barrowden is the town of Stamford. Well worth visiting
    Thanks.

    Is Peterborough worth a visit?
Peterborough Cathedral is pretty impressive if you're into that kind of thing. Peterborough itself is... mixed. (But I would say that as a Cambridge fan).

For somewhere random nearby to spend half an hour try Fotheringhay. Small village that manages to be the place where Richard Duke of York is buried, Richard III was born and Mary Queen of Scots was executed. Nothing left of the castle bar a mound which gives good views over the river Nene, but the church is very grand (and has the aforementioned Duke's tomb). Two miles up the road I've heard good things about Elton Hall, though the opening hours are limited and pre-booking is essential so I haven't got round to going myself.

On the day of travel try and use a live sat nav app - I use Waze, I recommend it and it's free.  It shows live traffic status so if there is any long delays it will re-route you.

Strictly speaking Burghley House isn't in Stamford. Although right next door to Stamford, it's actually in the City of Peterborough unitary authority. On your way out of Stamford along Barnack Road towards the main visitors entrance with the stone wall surrounding Burghley Park on your right, you pass the "City of Peterborough" sign. But it is more than ten miles before you reach the outskirts of the city.

So although Lincolnshire can claim Belton House, Tattershall Castle and Woolsthorpe Manor, it cannot claim Burghley. Belton and Woolsthorpe are both easily reached from Barrowden.

Stamford is a lovely place to visit. If you are going to Barrowden via the A47, I presume you will come off the A1 at Stamford, its really easy, instead of turning right, turn left, then take the very next left into Stamford. It's like you are going into a housing estate, but it leads to the railway station. Park at the railway station and walk across the river bridges, known as the meadows. Theres many really good eating places.  Lots of old churches, and theres usually walking tours. I was there on Friday🙂

Near Oakham theres a huge garden centre Gates, that has a farm shop and other outlets and a really good restaurant.
I love the history of Rutland water, love the preserved church and the before and after photos, theres lots of places to stop around the water.

Oakham has a museum in the town centre, it's also got a castle, but nothing to write home about.

Peterborough cathedral is lovely, but if the weather is ok, Ferry meadows isnt bad. A nice walk round.
