Refund issued to gift card

I was recently given a £30 Love2shop gift card and ordered a few things from Peaccocks, which came to a total of £38.99, so I paid the difference of £8.99 by credit card. I then decided to return items totalling £9 to them and assumed that this amount (or at least £8.99) would be refunded back to my credit card, but they have instead put it back on my gift card. They have told me that this is just the way things work, but I just wanted to check if anyone knows if I'm legally entitled to get the money back to my card? It was a struggle to find somewhere I wanted to spend the money in the first place and I really didn't want to have to order something else from them now...
