Moving house

Shell currently provides our energy. We are moving house in July and wonder if we can just take on the supplier that is currently at the property, which is octopus or given the current energy crisis whether we should stay with shell. Any advice, if known would be grateful.

Not only can you use the current supplier for the property, you must do so.

When moving into a new property you are automatically in a deemed contract with the current supplier, in your case Octopus.

Take a meter reading and phone them to open the account with them. Don't let them tell you you need to chose a fixed tariff, that is not true.

Only after 21 day you would be able to change back to your old supplier Shell.
  • If you are on a fixed contract with Shell, there is no harm in asking whether it will agree to provide you with energy at your new property on your existing contract terms (the unit price and standing charge will be adjusted for the supply region).

If Shell agrees, you contact the existing (deemed) supplier with your details and meter readings. You then immediately initiate a switch back to Shell. You will pay the deemed supplier for all energy supplied until the transfer back to Shell goes through.

Thank you. Following what you have said, with Octopus we should be put on the standard tariff as per the previous owners?

Yes you will be on the deemed tariff, which is identical to the SVT when you open the account. This is why you should not let them tell you you can only join on a fixed tariff, you are already with Octopus by moving into the property.
