Surprise £1750 bill from EDF

We changed our gas supplier from Green Network Energy to Octopus in March 21 assuming there would be a smooth takeover i.e. there was no outstanding debt. So imagine my surprise when I received a letter from EFT a couple of days ago (yes, 15 months later)telling me that I owed them £1750 as they were recovering debt from GNE when they went bust. Furthermore, they have only given me 14 days before they "commence collection activity". Has this happened to anyone else and what did they do?

GNE customers were transferred to EDF effective 31st January 21, but it did take longer for that to be completed of course, but you should have been switching from EDf to Octopus by March, was there ever a final bill from EDF with an agreed meter reading?
Did you also get a bill from EDF with an agreed meter reading for the transfer from GNE?
... and did that meter reading agree with your final bill from GNE?

  • No there was never anything from EDF or anyone else until now. Just from Octopus in March last year telling me the changeover had been completed.

Regarding electricity (and I could write a novel about that) we switched from nPower to Octopus at the same time (after 4 years of them refusing to allow us to transfer but without telling us [or being able to tell us] why!)

so what was the reading on the last paid up bill from GNE and what was the start reading with Octopus?

What have nPower got to do with it? When did you switch?

May be better if you listed all dates and reading in chronological order, the someone may be able to help.

Feels like we only half the story...

One of the reasons people are told not to attempt switching until you are a confirmed customer of the SoLR, there is a fair chance of it all going wrong.
Did you take meter readings on 31 Jan 21, the date EDF took over ?
Have you got the last bill you received from GNE ?
Have you got the meter read from when you switched to Octopus ?
Did you work out how much you owed GNE at the date you thought you switched to Octopus ?
  • No nothing about SoLR - at the time was just keen to get away from nPower who were previous electricity provider. Changed as soon as ombudsman ruled in our favour over 2 year dispute and nPower allowed us to go. Changing the gas at the same time seemed like a good idea.
Didn't take meter reading in Jan 21 as I didn't know GNE had gone bust.
Probably have or could get the Octopus reading.
Didn't realise there would be anything owed to GNE as per previous occasions assumed that is all sorted out at time of switch

How long were you with GNE? Do you have any bills at all from that period? Were you paying them anything?
By the standards of 2020, £1750 would buy an awful a lot of gas.
