Prepaid or tariff?

Hi, I'm currently renting and on a prepaid energy meter where I have to top up my energy before using it. Same as old pay as you go phones.

I'm moving house in the next month to one I'll own. I'm confused about all the costs of energy at the moment. Would I be better sticking with pay as you go in the new house or switching to prepaid/DD energy?

I've tried looking through the guides on here but there's no mention of pay as you go being good or bad?

Thanks

    Hi there,

This link gets about 60-70% consumption correct so put in the new house details and see if it gives you an estimate for energy usage as a base? It will then give you an idea of monthly costs (very rough but better than nothing)

Prepaid is slightly more expensive in standing charges (about 5p for electricity and 10p for gas per day) than credit accounts.

Unit rates are about the same or sometimes even a bit (0.2p to 0.25p) cheaper than credit accounts.

So you will pay £55 more in standing charges and make up a bit on cheaper rates. So if you like prepaid it will not cost that much more, and direct debit will give a bit of a savings.

The state of the industry it is unlikely that the provider will offer you the choice - at least not in a time frame that is any use - the same for smart meters.
