***Change of contract for new student house in Aug 22 - changes to gas/elec allowance*** Advice!!

I'm a parent of a student about to move in to a student house in August. Contract was signed in Dec 21. 9 students moving in together. They took out an unlimited gas/elec agreement with lettings agent. However in that time obviously gas/elec has risen. I'd like to know their rights. Can a letting agent change the policy from unlimited usage to reasonable usage? They have sent us a chart of what they deem reasonable gas usage and for 9 people they are stating just under 7000 kwh of gas per year, however, google says an average household uses 33-38 per day. That means a yearly average of 13,000+ units. If they only allowing 7000kwh as reasonable, then surely their estimations are unreasonable? I'd really like to know what is going on nationwide with parents funding students at a time of crisis. Thanks to any one who knows.

They can’t change the contract, but if it went to court, the court could look at it as what is reasonable. Clearly unlimited doesn’t mean that people don’t have to act responsibly. What is questionable is the limit, so maybe the students should discuss this with the agent. It may be a misunderstanding, or it may be the agent expects the students to go home during university holidays, so usage lower.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
