sainsburies out of bread haha

Options
I use sainsburies home delivery due to immobility and its usually every 1.5 to 2 weeks as its expensive to use too much for every week.

So the order before last I had bread with only 2 days left on it and was hard etc usually its 4-5 days and soft. I complained and they added a note to my account explaining its important I dont get shortened life bread due to not easy for me to get more when its out of date.

The last order I got no bread at all apparently they were out of stock, sainsburies will look for substitutes unless you specifically say no on order I did not say no also confirmed on order receipt. So apparently they must have ran out of bread completely at the store on a mid week day which to me seems stupid. Sainsburies wouldnt send new bread all they offered me was a voucher for £1 and all the stuff I paid for to go in the bread I had to either eat standalone or waste.

This time I ordered the normal bread + a sainsburies long life loaf so will see what happens but if the order pickers are taking the mickey because of my initial complaint I may have to use asda instead.

This is why I hate online shopping, because they give you all the items with the shortest dates.

If you do the shopping yourself you can reach to the back and pick all the items with the longest dates. With items like bread it's surprising - you can get as much as a 3 day difference on the date just by straining your arm to get a loaf from the back or from the pallette underneath.

Me too - I hate online shopping because they give you the shortest dates and you can never really be sure what you are going to get. How about half baked bread? I love Sainsburys half baked bread and it means you can have fresh bread when you feel like it. Mostly it comes as rolls or baguettes. Bread can then be frozen which is OK for toast.

Well some of us dont have a choice in my case its online shopping or no food.

Had another delivery yesterday this time bread was fine. On the whole I have been using sainsburies all year and they have been fine it was only the last 2 deliveries I had problems, however I have now read some horror stories on here about tesco home delivery who seem considerably worse.

How did you/anyone manage before the Internet?

With the kindness of others, I'd expect. Using the internet has given independence back to a lot of people.

I've never really had any problems with Tesco - food has always gone when it's meant to. I did once get some extra items I'd never ordered, and of course, when that happens, what are you meant to do? By the time you've checked all of your shopping and realised the mistake, it's too late to call the delivery man back. (The extra food was Bernard Matthews, so it's not as if I ever actually ate the stuff! Had to give it away!)

I have had problems with getting in bakery products with a longer shelf life on them though - even when I've made a delivery note specifying the shortest shelf life I'm prepared to take.

Can you maybe freeze part of a loaf of bread? I.e. keep out some slices to keep you going for a few days, bung the rest in the freezer, then take some more out the day before you run out?

In your case, as you choose to shop online because of genuine health problems, I would imagine a phone call to the right person to explain this would deliver results. People are always prepared to go that one step further when they think it's actually warranted.
  • I work in a supermarket (not for long new job jan 08) and part of the problem with fresh stuff and online shopping is that most of the runners doing the shopping do so in the early morning (4am onwards)
Most night teams are for grocery so the fresh staff arrive after the online runners. This means that if a runner doesn't come back for a fresh item once its been stocked with fresh stuff, you will receive yesterdays stock.
as an example in my store the bakers start at 6am it doesnt take a genius to work out that a runner starting at 4 will put short coded bread in his order because he's 2 hours in front of the fresh stuff.

I wasnt ill then and could do normal shopping. I expect it would be a case of not been able to shop independantly and relying on freinds/family.

If its an afternoon order is it still picked early in the day and left in the delivery vehicle all day?

No not in the vehicle. They will pick the order and store them in frozen, chilled areas until its time for delivery.
