Transferring a portion of a S&S ISA?

Just a what if for now but I could possibly need to know for sure down the line so I'll try get an understanding now.

So say I hold a cash ISA with Nationwide. £1000. I want to transfer £500 to say Halifax cash ISA - just fill the form out, say you want to transfer £500, job done, £500 then shows in each account (ignoring interest and assuming paying in to only one cash ISA in a single tax year of course).

Not quite sure how it works with a S&S ISA. Say I hold 3 funds.
To keep it real simple, £1000 in VLS 60, £1000 in VLS 80 and £1000 in VLS 100 (let's not stick on why would you hold those 3, it's not important - they're just examples).

Let's also say that that account is held with I don't know, Vanguard for example. It's now a new year and for whatever reason I'm wanting to transfer a portion of it to a new provider, let's say AJ Bell.

Random providers, random funds, random amounts - all just for the example.

Now say I want to transfer £1000 (again, interest aside) but I specifically want it to come from the VLS100 holding, as in 1) I want to shut it down totally within Vanguard 2) I still want the VLS 60 & VLS 80 to be held with Vanguard but no further holding and 3) I want that £1000 that was in the VLS 100 to be transferred to AJ Bell.

To go a little further, I may not necessarily want the AJ Bell holding to be VLS 100. I may have decided to have that £1000 invested in something else.

So question is how do you specify? As part of the transfer request form is there a section to say specifically that you want the amount coming from fund X but not fund Y / Z & you'd therefore want fund X closed down?

You can do partial in-specie transfers with many platforms but you can also do partial cash transfers as well.  The latter is often easier.

With partial in-specie transfers, you would specify the unit count.

If you think you're likely to want to do this this then you'll need to check your platforms for what they will allow as there's not just the one transfer form that they all use - I wanted to do something similar with a SIPP a few years ago, and every one had some difference on what their transfer form allowed.

There's also the case that at least one platform would only allow a complete transfer of an ISA away from them, so no partial transfers at all. I seem to remember it was Fidelity, but there may well be others.

If you are intending to switch, you can sell the fund you don't want to keep prior to transferring as cash to a new provider (if both providers allow partial transfers). You would be out of the market for a week or two. Different providers have different policies. For example, Vanguard will only allow you to transfer all of your cash to them, or all of your Vanguard investments. You would not be permitted to leave some cash or some Vanguard funds with the old provider.

You can detail your instructions in the transfer form, and if necessary you should be able to add further instructions via email/letter to clarify what you intend to do.

From memory partial transfers in specie was more common with SIPP. In specie transfers for ISA is common but it usually involves a full transfer of all funds and closing the existing account.
