Is it safe to give my bank account details to Ebay to receive payments?

I see that Ebay now require you to give your bank account details to receive payments, rather than using PayPal.
How safe is this? Should I be worried about them getting hacked?
Has this caused problems for people?

I opened a second current account with my existing bank purely for this purpose. There is no reason why you can’t have more than one current account, or even a subsidiary account with your main bank.
I’d rather give details of an account maintained with around £50ish than my main bank account to eBay. I explained why to the bank and the assistant said ‘very sensible’. Should anyone else need to pay me by bank transfer for any reason, it can go in there as well.Despite all the safeguards around banking and faster payments, IMHO the fewer people who know my main bank details the better, particularly eBay, as that hacking risk is one I’m concerned about.
I’ve been pleased with how quickly I’ve been paid from eBay under the new system.2 -
It's as safe as when you used to write a cheque to someone. All your details were on that too.

Thanks very much, everyone - I like the idea of opening a separate account with a small balance.0
