Boiler replacement query

New Boiler Question,
Given that new boilers can cost between £800 to £2400, what is the cost of manufacturing a boiler, and how much is the mark up on a boiler to make up the retail price?   Or is the retail price purely set by what the "market can bare" rather than the manufacturing cost and a "respectable" rather than an "exhorbitant" sum for profit?
My friend did point out that as I need a boiler the above question is academic as I have no choice but to buy one now my old one has been condemned . Just incase someone says my question is unnecessary. ( I wonder if they were hand carved by artisans out of precious metals or somthing)

Your friend is correct. What does it matter what mark up manufacturer's make on their product, it will probably be far less than you imagine as they make money on volume rather than individual units. The price you pay will largely be determined by who you purchase it from and who you get to install it. Buy it from some of these large volume retailers/installers such as Boxt or Heatable and the cost to your will be less than if you get it from an independent gas installer however you'd more likely get a better service from  the independent.

A boiler is not like jewellery or a fashion item, but something purely utilitarian and the "mark up" will represent the costs borne by the retailer and profit set to remain competitive with other retailers.

Like all marketable goods they'll sell for as much as people will pay, the units are engineered to a price so they can be sold at a price. They'll also be engineered to have a lifespan.

That said, go Worcester Bosch if you can - only boilers I'd ever use.

You should widen your horizons a bit. WB are not the boilers they once were, probably around the 3rd/4th place on my list.

they certainly aren't, but nothing is. It's like saying VW aren't what they were, no they aren't, but they are still better than Ford etc.
Boilers seem to have a 10 year life now so don't worry too much about which brand you pick, the fact that gas is running out may mean you're new boiler is potentially ripped out before it expires...
Main seem quite good value to me now

  • The lifespan question I hadnt thought much about, as the last two boilers at the last two places I had were in excess of 25 years in age, nowadays most things have built in obsolesence,( and an intention not to manufacture spares after a certain time) to guarantee new sales, thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my question.
