Chromebook password problem

This morning, all was well with me and my Chromebook in that as usual I started it up, the screen came up with the six spaces into which I typed the 6 characters of my log-in (?) and hey ho off we went.  However, earlier this evening I installed "Find My Device" on my Android phone (which is linked to the Chromebook), and in so doing got into a muddle with my Google account password and whatnot.

The outcome is that I now have "Find My Device" installed on my phone, a new password for my Google account, and a new way of opening my Chromebook!  Now, instead of the six "boxes" for the six characters of the Chromebook password, I get invited to enter my password - by which it means my Google password!  There's now a padlock symbol in front of that space, and if I hesitate long enough before entering the password, it invites me to "tap on profile picture".  And when I do, I'm in!

How can I revert to the simple 6-character "password" I've always used on this machine when it now won't accept anything less than 8 - and even then they have to be a mix of upper and lower etc just like a full-on account password?

This is really weird.  Just got a notification on my phone telling me that the Chromebook is unlocked!  Something to do with "Smart Lock" - whatever that is?

It seems that every time I open up the Chromebook, my phone now tells me that's what I've done ...

You have paired your phone with your chromebook.

Smart Lock is a feature which means that if your phone is nearby and unlocked, then your Chromebook is unlocked too without needing to enter a password/PIN.

Regarding the password, if you look in the settings under "lock screen and sign in" you can change how you log in to be either by password only or have the option of entering your PIN or password.
