Rat Problem! Please Help

Hi all, hope you dont mind me posting here coz dont know where else to turn. I live in an end terrace, and have had probs with rats in the wall cavity of next door for a long time now. In july i paid £100 to a pest controller to solve prob. unfortunately he cudnt find out how they were getting in and thought they may be getting in further up the terrace. 2 bad smells later and 3 visits from pest man, prob seemed to be solved ( mid october). unfortunately, last nite i was woken by a rat trying its best to get in my bedroom? needless to say i had v little sleep! i cant afford to pay rat man again, so can anyone give me advice as what to do bout rat prob. sorry 4 rambling post but realy hope someone can help? thanks lots

  • In the case of rats I think you'll find that your local council will help. Phone them first thing Monday morning, and emphasise that it is rats you are talking about!!! As they are such a health risk, I think they are obligated to help. Good luck!!

Was the pest control man you contacted a private company, or part of the council environmental health dept. ??

If you have them, as an end terrance house your neighbours must have them also. How long is the terrance ??

You should inform your concil if you have not done so already.

I agree. Although I would see if they have an out of hours number for such occurances.

    Hi Basil,

There's a long thread on the In My Home board that may help:

    Getting rid of rats/mice

I'll move your thread over there tomorrow.

    This thread may help too:

rats do you kill them or humanely release them?

pest man was a private firm, i didnt think council would help? the terrace is prob 20 houses long, so could be coming in at any point. my rat man searched around my property but found no evidence of where the rats were getting in. So my local council should help? but wont hat cost me? i cant afford another £100. BTW thahks to you all for your help. much appreciated

Speak to your neighbours... as they will have them too in a terrace block. Vermin are not fussy... and will just run the length of the terrace.

Phone your council. They may charge you a nominal amount. It varies from council to council... but if you know your neighbours have rats also, it will cut the cost. Vermin is the responsibility of the council environmental health department.... Although the definition of vermin varies from council to council. But my understanding is that rats and mice are classed as vermin country wide. Pidgeons and squirrels are area dependent.

And not too freak you out too much.... I keep hearing noises in my kitchen now... and think there is a mouse under the kickboards:eek:

Where did I put the councils number????

    Good Luck basil

You'll need to check, but as far as I'm aware, help from your local council should be free. Got to be worth a 'phone call. Good luck.

    No probs basil.
I know what you mean about not wanting to contact your neighbours.
Just explain that to the council when you phone. They should know what to do...as they will have been in this circumstance before.
And as Churchmouse says, they may not charge you.
But if you think the rats are getting in further down the terrace, when you tell the council this they should investigate your suspicions.

I think the noise in my kitchen was actually my wine fermenting:o

Good Luck basil.... Let us know how you get on:D
