I've just checked my bank account balance and I've received a random large credit appear today. I've not had any  correspondence from anyone to explain why it's been sent or what it's for. As far as I remember back we've never been with Shell, so am mega confused. The bank don't have any more details. Does anyone know of any refunds being paid? Many thanks

You say you've never been with Shell, so why would you legitimately recieve a refund?

Call them, its clearly a mistake.

Did you have an energy supplier go bust in the past 9 months or so, possibly after you'd already left them?
Were you ever with Goto Energy, Daligas, Pure Planet, Colorado Energy, or Green?
All those suppliers went bust and Shell has been dealing with outstanding customer balances in dribs and drabs.

None of those. I was with people's energy but had my £75 refund back from them.

Spies - I've tried but can't get through today. I've moved the cash into a savings account so it's not touched and called my bank to see if they had any other info. Not a lot else I can do tonight before the bank holiday weekend. Hopefully will either receive something in post or I'll get through to Shell.

How did Shell manage to make the deposit ? If you haven't ever been a customer of them or any of the companies SOLR'd to Shell then they shouldn't have your details and I thought that names were being matched with bank account numbers now for bank transfers.

Shell sent me a small refund cheque a while ago.  It related to First Utility who had supplied me in the dim and distant past, a company that Shell took over.
I forget the exact reason but it wasn't an obvious refund of credit, IIRC it was some technical rule that they hadn't followed correctly and of which customers would have been unaware.

has Shell used the wrong bank details (i.e. yours) ?

surprising if so as I would have though the name would have to match ?

If it was an error their end and they realise and request the money back, will that cause you problems if they just "do it" without notification?

I would have thought it's best to leave it there until you've resolved the matter.

Can't you just make a mental note not to touch it.

This is why I've queried it I don't know how they've got our bank details to make a deposit. Never knowingly been with them or any related companies they've taken over. I did get response to my email and they've requested meter numbers and account details. We've moved so many times over the years due to work it could be relating to any one of 16 properties. Have given them the last 6 addresses to check, so hopefully they'll be able to track it down.

I've moved it into savings so no chance of it being touched even by accident. I check my bank accounts daily, so if get do retrieve it will move it straight back.
