Stupid meters?

A condition of my EonNext fixed tariff was the installation of alleged smart meters.
These, gas and electricity, were installed a couple of months ago.
I thought the idea was to save having to manually read and submit readings?
A month after installation, no bill forthcoming, I submitted readings myself. Only a gas bill was generated. I phoned and an electricity bill was then provided in my account. I was told my billing was the 20th of each month. Really?
Whether the meters are not sending daily reading or they really are stupid, no idea?
The i.h.d. is showing all the relevant information as far as I can determine and the meter numbers on it agree with the actual meters.
What's the point if I have to submit my own readings each month? Not so "smart" are they?

I switched to EonNext last year and already had "dumb" smart meters which were installed by BG about 5 years ago. A couple of months back Eon made the electricity meter smart again, but not the gas. My billing date is also the 20th of each month, and that is when they take smart electricity readings. I still provide readings on the first of each month and get bills generated when I do that. They also generate an electricity statement on the 20th of each month. I emailed them to ask why they had only activated the electricity meter - they replied that they didn't know I also had a smart gas meter and would get it activated. Nothing has happened yet.
I assumed the 20th of the month for getting smart meter readings was because that is the "anniversary" of my starting day. I did ask if they could change it to the first of the month and they said not.

Meters do not send daily readings. To access your meters, the designated supplier has to send out bespoke security certificates to each meter. These behind the scenes processes can take some weeks. I recall that it was three weeks for my gas meter.

The supplier then uses a secure piece of software to access the DCC Network (known as an Adapter) to 'pull' data from your meter, and to send out instructions/message to each meter; eg, a new tariff. The frequency of the data pull will depend on the meter profile that you have signed up to. For example, I get 30 minute data which is retrieved once every 24 hours by my supplier. The layered security built into the system is necessary because our meters are vulnerable: each meter has a built in remote disconnection facility. The layered works on the principle that your meter will not respond to an instruction unless it has been set up ready to receive it. There is a lot to go wrong in the commissioning process

Maybe not but they are not sending anything, apparently, when they should.
I manually entered readings, yesterday, in my account, and a statement was produced within a couple of hours.
At least they look "smart" and the gas meter is in cubic metres rather than cubic feet, like that it replaced! B)

Have you asked eOn if they are receiving smart meter data and do you know what frequency to expect them to produce bills? Giving a meter reading will trigger a bill with many suppliers but the lack of a monthly bill doesn't necessarily mean there is an issue.

Check here for smart meter data flow:

    N3rgy.com

Use the ‘I am a consumer’ link.

Reading your post again, it is worth making the point that meters have been enrolled onto the DCC Network by meter manufacturer and model. It is possible that the gas meter is yet to receive the necessary firmware update. Meter manufacturers are responsible for firmware not suppliers.

Migration details here (with the caveat that timescales may have moved to the right)
