Gas meter reading

Please could someone help with my meter reading, I have been threatened with debt agency if I don't pay the bill with Utilita Energy Company, the have sent me a request for £97.45, this is the problem the bill states as follows
1st April 21978 C
7th April-22096 E
My meter reading as of 29/05/22 reads 21994, I do not have a smart meter installed
I have tried in vain to speak to the company but to no avail I have sent a photo of my meter on 13/05/22

How can a E reading be higher than what the meter is reading, I switched to British Gas on 08/04/22, I paid up Utilita in April and was told the account was now closed and all payments were made.

Can anyone help please as this is a worry for me at the age of 75

Because "E" means "estimate". So give them the actual reading and wait for the amended bill.

As above, E means it was an estimated reading based on prior use.  If you submit an actual reading, they will amend the final bill.  Be aware though, that your first British Gas bill may rise, because you began your contract with them at a meter reading lower than they assumed.
  • The complaints procedure for Utilita should be on their website which you can use to dispute the bill.

Did you take a reading on or around the 8th of April?

Usually a new supplier will ask for a reading around the take over date and then let you know if it was accepted.

What date did you transfer over?
Did you you supply a reading on day of transfer as new company ask?

No need to jump straight to complaints, as there is nothing to really complain about.
Either update the meter reading via their website, or email it to them.

  • you need to contact British Gas and confirm the meter reading used on the transfer date - did you provide them the actual and have they used it?

All meter readings on a switch are industry validated; hence the annotation E against the switch reading.

Your validation might have gone slightly awry but it might be in your favour. You overpay the old supplier and you only pay the new supplier the daily standing charge until your actual meter reading PASSES the opening reading. The difference is within industry switch limits so it cannot be disputed by energy suppliers.

The true cost/saving to you is 22096 - 21978 times ( new unit price - old unit price). We are only talking about 118 units which you will not pay for twice.

    Welcome to the forum!
It is as Dolor states above. The only thing to verify is that the opening reading used by British Gas matches the final reading used by Utilita. Assuming it does, you've got a little extra energy at Utilita's prices, which were presumably lower than BG's. You do have to pay the Utilita bill though.
IF the closing/opening readings don't match (it happened once to me when I switched), then raise a complaint with British Gas, as you are currently their customer.
