Ryanair 10 year passport fiasco

Has anyone been involved with Ryanair passport rules. Passports must be valid for 10years. However, my wife's passport was issued 25JULY2012 EXPIRES 25JAN2023..
queried this with Customer Services at Stansted on 5 May 2022.... no you cannot travel on this passport must be for 10 years from issue date, ignore the expiry date therefore passport will expire 25 July 2022 and you must have 3 months left in order to travel. I pointed out to them that it is the written expiry date that should be accepted not Ryanair interpretation.. The result was that we had to apply for a renewal passport and could not get a refund as the error was not Ryanair. Could not use flights 11May-27May.
Since then I have read and watched various attempts to explain this 10 year rule and it is misleading. The Derbyshire Post recently reported that a couple in a similar situation had received a refund from Ryanair as they admitted they got it wrong. When I got in touch with Ryanair chatline yesterday they know nothing about it and are still working from the old script policy . I have numerous transcripts with Ryanair about this falling on deaf ears and again raised a complaint requesting a refund etc.

The confusion has been caused by the interpretation of the 'must have 3 months left before expiry' part of the checks. I have only recently seen a totally unambiguous explanation of the rules and that is - the passport must be less than 10 years old on the date of travel and there must be a minimum of 3 months remaining from the expiry date shown on the passport.I had up to that point assumed that as the passport was only valid for travel for 10 years from the date of issue, the '3 months remaining' would therefore mean 9 years and 9 months from issue date. It doesn't. Illogical to my mind but then when did Governments every work on logic?0

Note that the rules are set by EU countries and interpreted (sometimes incorrectly) by airlines. Countries within the EU no longer regard a passport as being valid if the date of issue was more than ten years ago, no matter what expiry date was printed on the passport. So if your planned journey was to an EU country then it sounds as if Ryanair were correct in this case.
If you can show that Ryanair incorrectly applied the rules for your country of destination then you would have a strong case for compensation.

Assuming you were travelling into the EU:
If you are a non-EU national wishing to visit or travel within the EU, you will need a passport:
- valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting,
- which was issued within the previous 10 years,
Where were you travelling to?
Check here for the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to Foreign travel advice - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)0 -

The 10 year rule only applies to the departure date so you needed to start your holiday before 25th July 2022 and return by 3 months before 25th Jan 2023.0
