Thank you for all your advice, in particular about it being ok to use bleach in the shower (I was majorly panicking about this).

I put the shower plug in last night and there was less of a smell this morning. But the smell got worse as the day went by.

I don’t think my shower is electric (see pics).

I think I am going to have to call someone out, but who?

Thank you all for your help.

    Yup, not electric.
Could you post, please, a photo of your light fitting, and also a close-up of the shower waste in the tray?
Also, do you know how to open the drain waste inside the tray in order to clean it out?
There should be a couple of wee tests (you know what I mean) that should eliminate the shower drain as the source, if it ain't that.
Any natural daylight in the room?

Could be a light fitting - do you always have the light on when you shower?

I had the same smell in a bedroom, finally realised that the light had been fitted with a bulb that was overrated for the shade (weird metallic finish inside) and the smell was the plastic light fitting melting!

Have you tried taking the cover off the drain and cleaning out inside? Mine contained a basket like trap inside which came out easily and there was a lot of gubk inside before I soaked all pieces in bleach solution.

    Nice shower area.
I too dont think it is the eltrics.

The shallow u ben traps and even the other others at times leave a slight air gap through which the smell travels.

Try this, block the water waste outlet 100% and keep windows closed and see if there is still a smell and if not then open the window as at times smell come from outside and hang around in an area.

Put your nose to the gulley and take a smell and that will confirm one way or another if it is the gulley. If not then it is the eltrics or coming from the outside

Btw, your shower room floor, is that tiled?

I had something similar recently and I clean the shower trap regularly.
Small amounts of stuff didn't work so one night I put a tablespoon of Bicarbonate of Soda (£1 for a tub) and a tumbler of white vinegar (Tescos 36p) and the smell had gone.
This combination foams by the way. Great for cleaning drains.
A large bottle of Coke is also a good cleaning agent but the vinegar and Bicarb works best.
Shower gel really sticks round drains. I've started to use bars of soap again and have had to clean less often.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

    Hi all,

Thank you for all your help with my fishy bathroom problem.  After I tried the bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar twice the smell went - hooray!

However, since then my neighbour sent me a picture of her ceiling above my bathroom. She has a damp patch, maybe 10-15cm long. She got Pimlico Plumbers out who said they would need to go through her ceiling into our bathroom to see where the problem is - isn't this a bit excessive? And costly?

I got my own plumber out and he agreed the issue was the bathroom (after ruling out the appliances in the kitchen). Still, after a general look around what bits were accessible (the whole bathroom has been tiled top to bottom the floor) he recommended I get a 'leak detection' company out who could tell me which of the three fixtures (shower, toilet or sink) were the problem.  The only companies I found doing this service quoted £400 to £1100!!!

I got my neighbour to tap the damp with a broom and it sounds like the noise is coming from my sons bedroom, adjacent to the sink in the bathroom.  I bought the property earlier this year.  It was renovated a few years before that but the owner never actually lived in it. So we bought it pretty much new.

If you have any advice on what I should do, please let me know.  Thank you so much.

Everything Pimlico do is excessively costly, and they have also been found to be in breach of employment law. Charlie Mullins is a truly vile person.
