In default on my credit report

So for the last 3 years I’ve been going around in circles with EE as they’ve put a default on my credit report, now I’ve never had a contract with EE infact I’ve never had a contract phone and have always had pay as you go with a different company, in 2018 I moved house and because there was a fault with BT which meant we were without Internet for a month so I bought a pay as you go EE WiFi box, which you had to top up before you could use it etc very expensive but we only needed it for a month until our phone line was fixed.
then in 2019 they put a default on my credit report saying that I had defaulted on payments and I owed them £36, I've placed disputes with Experian but nothing happens, I’ve even phoned up EE and tried to resolve it because it’s been more than 3 years they have no information about the account but get this they had my (old) address and even my bank details.. but couldn’t tell me anything about the debt or the kind of account that they were saying I had defaulted on and that it was with a debt collection agency.. I even said if I paid the £36 would they take that off my credit report and they said it didn’t work like that.

So my question is how do I get this default taken off my report because I know I don’t owe them a penny and I certainly never defaulted as it was a pay as you go device also non of it makes sense why did they make me defaulted a year later and why is it only £36 and how can I default on something that they had my bank account details?
Any advice because it’s now come down to principle and I’m sick of seeing that default on my credit report as I’ve worked hard to get out of debt and build my score up again, any advice will be appreciated.

I don’t believe after 3 years they wouldn’t have details - have they sold it on?
Log a formal complaint over email or letter about the situation and all the details you have. You could also contact their data officer and/or request a SAR of all details they have for you.
Experian won’t be any help as they will just go to EE who will just say yeah it’s fine and it’s EE you need to deal with directly.

Thank you for your reply Adamp, that’s exactly what Experian have been doing and it’s very frustrating !I will request a SAR first as I don’t even have the full account number, thank again for your advice.0
