Capquest demand letter for an overdraft opened in 1997

Hi All,
I'm posting this here as I see a number of other threads concerning the company Capquest being posted here, please let me know if I should post elsewhere.
Roughly two weeks ago I received a letter from a company called Capquest asking for payment of an outstanding balance for an overdraft account that was opened in 1997. The letter was addressed to my name but with a different second name initial. I have the same forename as my Dad and the second initial on the letter is his. I called my Dad to query the account and he says he never opened an Abbey account.
Now considering this account was opened in 1997, some 25 years ago, I was roughly 18 / 19 years old and was quite financially irresponsible in those days. I opened a number of different accounts (credit cards, loans and overdrafts) and some of those periods I had no job and ultimately defaulted on a number of debts. Some debts I eventually paid and some I didn't and left. I can't remember the details of all these accounts and also have no paperwork to prove which accounts were left outstanding.
So I called Capquest to say that this demand, as far as I'm aware, has nothing to do with me and that the middle initial of my name was not what they had on the account, they said they now needed to prove my identity to investigate possible fraud and have now sent me a letter asking for my identity and proof of address in 1997. I have no such documentation and back then moved many times living on friends sofas and in the odd bedsit on and off.
Reading some of the very useful threads on here, it looks to me like the account should now be classed as Statute Barred (if it indeed does have anything to do with me) given that this is the first demand I've ever seen on an account like this in the 25 years since it was opened. So my question is, what is the approach I should take now with Capquest? Now I'm in my mid 40's, I have a good job, family and hefty mortgage with very little unsecured debt. My credit files all look in very good shape and I have a maximum credit score with Equifax, Experian and the like.
Many thanks!

Don`t get into semantics with them, send a hybrid letter to them, "the debt is not mine, and would be statute barred now anyway".
They have to prove liability, and enforceability, not you.

Thanks for this, is there a specific hybrid letter / template you would recommend?
