You can get the MOT done up to a month before the existing one expires.  So if you do it today, it'll be "post-dated" as it were so that the new one expires 1st June next year.  You could have equally got it done on 2nd May, and the expiry date would still be 1st June next year.  In fact, it's always a good idea to do it a couple of weeks before the current one expires, so any necessary repairs can be done.
MOT has nothing to do with when tax is due.

Do you mean your MOT? (for which your vehicle needs to be inspected, and pass) or your VED (also colloquially known as Road Tax)

You should probably have already done it but it'll be valid until tomorrow. I don't know what you mean by missing out on a months tax. Or did you mean renewing your tax?

You might find it's not easy to do an MOT at very short notice especially with holidays etc this week.

Ah! I meant tax! So sorry, I wrote it super quick in my lunch break! Sorry for confusion!
I wondered if I renewed it today whether it would then expire May 1st 2023 where as if I leave it till tomorrow it will keep same expiry next year, 1st June 2023?
    Thank you

It will renew for 12 months from when your existing Road Fund Licence expires. Not 12 months from when you pay it.

BTW the tax doesn't expire on 1st June, but 31st May.

That's true but you're being pedantic as it's valid for the whole of the 31st. At no time on the 31st could you be in a position to be prosecuted for being without it.

But presumably could be at any point between midnight tonight and whenever you get round to renewing it? So in reality today is the deadline for renewing it without suffering an untaxed period.

But if it doesn't expire until midnight how can it expire on 31st?
