Benny - thank you. That seems to be a LOT better. I appreciate your input.

    Qriz -
    Thank you.
Yes, I had to chase for a gas safety check of the back-boiler - carried out two days before completion!
You were fortunate: there is no requirement on the seller to provide a buyer with a gas safety certificate. GSCs and safety checks are a landlord’s responsibility for lettings.

My next door neighbour’s 2 year old managed to partly close the gas valve - unknown to his parents - so it isn’t that difficult. The gas valve should be located close to the meter. Seriously, it is worth locating it for safety reasons.

The reading is now almost 33933.354. Am I misinterpreting ? Don't I then use the formula to calculate of :

    10 × 2.83 × 1.02264 × 39.2† ÷ 3.6

Which I calculate as £12 + VAT for 2 tanks of water and a couple of boiled eggs

That's not right. Don't multiply by 2.83 for metric meters.

A thread from a long time ago re pilot lights
I have 2 pilot lights, one for heating, the other for hot water. The hot water one uses 3 kWh of gas a day and the heating one 5 kWh a day.

Indeed you did but they might have wanted to know where their calculation went wrong which you didn't explain.

OP - I have a Baxi Bermuda back boiler (40 years old) and it does indeed have a pilot light.  I'm on LPG, so have no idea about how much gas it uses.  At least the gas that it is burning helps warm the house!

Most of the heat will be going straight up the flue and will contribute virtually nothing to warming the house.

Thanks again, All. Luckily a gas -fitter was scheduled for a boiler-install quote. It's the pilot light. No point having that on while I'm not even moved in yet.
So that's now switched off until needed but with electric shower/kettle that'll probably be October if the back boiler still in situ.
